*Available as an ADDITION to an itinerary. Call Quality Travel Services for more information.*

Verdant valleys, snow-crowned peaks, lush rainforests and a colorful palette of peoples - the images of Yunnan that delight and beguile the traveler. Once considered a travel backwater, Yunnan has emerged, in recent years, as the fastest growing new destination in China. Situated at the cross-roads of China and Southeast Asia, it proves an ideal extension to both China and Southeast Asia itineraries. Good accommodation, a network of new airports and the greatest variety of landscapes within one Chinese province, Yunnan is a wonderful travel experience.

Day 1: Arrive Kunming

After arriving at Kunming's new airport, you are met and transferred to your hotel. Time permitting, enjoy some introductory city sightseeing. Harbour Plaza Hotel

Day 2: Kunming

"The City of Eternal Spring," Kunming sits at 6,100 feet on the fertile Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, on the easternmost arm of the mighty Himalayan mountain system. A balmy climate gives the city a verdant charm - flower-filled parks, lush gardens and attractive temples dot the cityscape. A full day of sightseeing today explores scenic highlights including the Golden Temple, the Provincial Museum and site of the 1999 World Horticultural Exposition.

Day 3: Kunming - Dali

Early this morning you fly from Kunming to Dali, along the shores of western Yunnan's Erhai Lake at the foot of the snow-capped Cangshan Mountains. Visit the Three Pagodas, symbol of Dali's rich history, watch traditional indigo dyeing at Zhoucheng and marvel at the kaleidoscope of colors at the Shaping weekly market. This afternoon, a private boat cruise brings you across Erhai Lake to charming Jinsuo Island, site of a traditional Bai fishing village.

Day 4: Dali - Lijiang

This morning you explore the old city of Dali, with its gated city wall and cobbled streets. After lunch, drive north off the Erhai Plain onto the high plateau of Lijiang, the land of the Naxi people and one of the original ources of inspiration for the novel Lost Horizons. Set at almost 8,000 feet at the foot of the mighty Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Lijiang is a Shangri-la tucked into the far corner of southwest China.

Days 5-6: Lijiang

Spend two days exploring the treasures of Lijiang, reflected in its stunning natural setting and in her people, the Naxi. Descended from Tibetan nomads who arrived here more than 1,500 years ago, the Naxi follow ancient folkways based on a reverence for nature and respect for the teachings of their dongba (shamans). After exploring the markets and alleys of the old city of Lijiang (now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of China's most well preserved old city quarters), drive to the foot of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain to visit the Naxi villages of Baisha and Longquan, unspoiled and rooted to the traditions of Naxi culture. On your second full day in Lijiang, drive overland to Shigu (Stone Drum Village) to view the "First Bend in the Yangzi River" as it comes flooding south from the high mountain plains of Tibet. Shigu is also renowned as a historic landmark: the legions of Kublai Khan arrived here in the 13 th century, and this was also the site of a celebrated crossing of the Yangzi made by tens of thousands of communist soldiers during the winter of 1935, on the Long March to northwestern China.
